MELANOMA SCREENING
Computerised
Computerised Melanoma Screening is an innovative new method of monitoring a
patient's skin, especially those patients who are at risk of developing melanoma.
The dramatic increase in incidences of malignant melanoma continue. All studies
now show that regular accurate skin observation is the best method of detecting
melanomas at an early stage, thus improving prognosis.
As some 80% of melanomas arise on previously normal skin, just excising moles
does not reduce the risk of melanoma developing.
Commonly Asked Questions
How does it work?
Using a computerised digital video camera, multiple images/photographs are taken
of the patient's skin. The images are stored on a computer disk and repeated
at desired intervals, e.g. yearly. The repeated images can be superimposed exactly
on top of the stored image on the computer screen. By scanning in and out of
the two images, any changes can be clearly detected on the computer.
The computer can also align pictures next to each other, zoom in on a particular
area.
You will also see a doctor on each review appointment.
Who needs imaging?
People who have the following would benefit from computerised imaging, due to
their increased risk of developing melanoma:
• Large numbers of normal moles;
• Many unusual/dysplastic moles;
• Previous melanomas;
• Previous blistering sun burns;
• A family history of melanoma or dark moles
What areas are taken?
Full body imaging:
A standard set of approximately 30 images is taken of the
whole body, and then close-ups of individual moles. As a result, the computer
will show up any new moles which need to be checked or any changes in pre-existing
moles.
Localised Imaging:
It may be only necessary to focus on one area such as the
back, or just record an individual mole.

Cosmetic Surgery
The Computerised Imaging System can show patients how they could look after
any cosmetic operation, e.g. laser blepharoplasty, laser resurfacing of wrinkles,
or liposuction.
Please ask our cosmetic nurse for information.
