TATTOO AND PIGMENT REMOVAL
YAG Laser
Commonly Asked Questions
1. What is Laser?
Laser is a concentrated high intensity light that targets specific areas depending
on its wavelength and strength.
2. How does the laser treat tattoos and pigmentation?
The YAG laser has four different wavelengths (1064 infrared, 532 green, 650
red and 585 yellow) which are maximally absorbed by blue/black, red/brown, green
and blue pigment respectively. The laser is not as well absorbed by other colours.
When the pigment absorbs the laser, the light energy is converted to heat and
sound, shattering the pigment into smaller particles which are absorbed by the
body's scavenger system. Therefore fading can continue for weeks or even months
after each treatment. Freckles, sunspots, cafe au lait marks and other superficial
pigmentation can also be significantly reduced by the YAG laser. Moles and deeper
pigmentation have a more variable response.
3. How long does the procedure take?
Treatment time depends on the area to be treated and the colours and complexity
of the tattoo and this can be discussed at your consultation. Each area will
need multiple treatments at a minimum of six weeks apart.
4. Does the YAG laser hurt?
The procedure is relatively painless when a topical anaesthetic cream is applied
one hour before treatment, not rubbed in and anaesthetic is injected into the
area. Usually there is no pain after the procedure.
5. What happens after the procedure?
A dressing may be applied as there is often swelling and pinpoint bleeding.
Antiseptic or antibiotic creams also may be used. The area needs to be treated
gently for three to four days. Sun protection after treatment is important.
6. What risks are involved with the procedure?
Swelling and pinpoint bleeding usually occurs and crusting or scabbing can develop.
Most people return to work immediately after treatment. Occasionally blistering
can occur as can increased or decreased pigmentation but this is usually transient.
Burns, scars and keloid have been reported though this is very rare.
7. How long do the effects last?
For tattoos, whatever is cleared is permanent, and remember clearing continues
for months after each treatment. The number of treatments depends on the tattoo,
colours and concentration of ink and varies for each patient.
For pigmentation, lightening continues with each treatment but sun exposure
may cause re-pigment so sun care is very important.
9. Who uses the laser?
The laser machine is very expensive and the operator needs specialised supervised
training in order to safely use the laser. Our doctors are trained and have
experience in the latest laser methods so they will be able to answer any further
questions.
